RYAN GIGGS has taken his first step towards becoming Manchester United manager by accepting a player-coach role.
And the 39-year-old will be joined on David Moyes’ new-look backroom team by his former United team-mate Phil Neville.
Welsh veteran Giggs has been taking his coaching badges this summer and hopes his experience can help the squad.
“I hope I will be able to bring my experience to bear, having been both a player and part of the Manchester United family for so long.
“It’s no secret that I have been taking my qualifications and I see this as the first step in my future career.
“I’m really looking forward to working alongside David and the team.”
Neville, who left Old Trafford eight years ago, was a key part of Moyes’ squad at Everton and the pair were back working together at Carrington yesterday.
The former England defender, 36, said: “When I retired from football, I knew that I wanted to continue in the game. So when David called to give me this opportunity, I couldn’t resist.
“I gave my all when I played for Everton but it is no secret that this club is in my heart.
“I really enjoyed working with David and I think that, together with Ryan, we can make a real contribution to United.”
Both Giggs and Neville have been team-mates of Wayne Rooney and could be key in convincing the England striker his future is at Old Trafford.
Moyes has brought in Steve Round as his No 2, Jimmy Lumsden as first-team coach and Chris Woods as goalkeeping coach.
Paul Scholes, 38, will take on a full-time coaching role after he quit playing in May.
